During the spring semester of 2018, I participated in a field experience for my Reading Methods class and I was placed in the first grade classroom at the Viborg-Hurley Elementary. I spent approximately 60 hours over the course of six weeks. The first beginning weeks I observed the teacher and took notes on the strategies she implemented in her reading block. I then collaborated with the first grade teacher to design a lesson plan that I would then teach to the first graders. This lesson plan can be found on my work samples page. During this experience, I was able to lead students in their daily 5, read with students, read to students, sit-in on conferencing with students, and guide students in a reader's theater. We worked on sight words and reading with prosody. Being able to see a classroom in action was a great experience for me. I learned a lot about how and when to implement the daily 5 into a reading block, practice my classroom management skills and interact with students. Some things I still strive to work on are my classroom management skills. I was able to engage students, but was not sure how to keep their off-task behaviors to a minimum. This is something I plan to work on and strengthen throughout the rest of my time at Dakota State University and in my other classroom experiences to come.
